We are thrilled to announce a new feature that will enable the publishers to update the link of the published article: Permalink Editing Feature. Permalinks are the permanent URLs that point to a specific article, and allowing edits to them after publication can help in various scenarios, such as fixing typos, improving SEO, or updating outdated information without breaking existing links.
Note: The Permalink Editing feature in the dashboard is accessible to Owners and Admin only
To get started, go to the published section. You can find the Edit Permalink option in the extended menu as shown below.
Click the Edit Permalink for the article to change the URL. It will open a modal where you can provide the new URL as shown below
- Current Permalink - Current URL of the article
- Enter Permalink - Where you need to provide the new URL/link of the article. If there is any issue in the format, give a warning in red.
Once done and if the provided link has no issue in its format then the Update Permalink button will be enabled. Now, click the button to update
Once the Update Permalink button is clicked, a notification will be displayed as shown below. Now the article will have the updated link.
Note: The old link of an article will be redirected to the new link. If anyone visits the old link, will be redirected automatically to the new URL without breaking or causing errors.
These Permalinks will also be visible below the Permalink Field for the article in the dashboard under edit mode as shown below
How does this feature help Digital Publishers?
Correction of Errors: The ability to edit permalinks allows authors and editors to correct typos, grammatical errors, or other mistakes in URLs without having to delete and recreate the entire article or content item.
Improved SEO: Permalink editing can be valuable for search engine optimization (SEO). If you discover that a permalink could be better optimized for search engines, you can make adjustments without losing the SEO benefits already gained from the existing content.
Update Outdated Information: Over time, content may become outdated. With permalink editing, you can update the content and adjust the permalink to reflect the changes while maintaining the integrity of existing links.
Content Reorganization: If you want to reorganize your content structure, permalink editing allows you to change the URL structure to better fit your requirements without breaking existing links.
Enhanced User Experience: Permalink editing helps maintain a positive user experience by ensuring that users always land on the correct and up-to-date content, even if they access it through older links or bookmarks.
Preventing Broken Links: Instead of creating a new article with a corrected URL and potentially leaving behind broken links to the old one, you can edit the permalink and set up redirects to ensure a seamless transition for users and search engines.
Flexibility in Content Creation: It provides content creators with more flexibility in naming articles or pages, allowing for creativity and optimization without being constrained by initially chosen URLs.
Content Maintenance: As your content evolves, you can use permalink editing to keep your URLs in sync with the content, reducing confusion for both users and content creators.
Implementation of a permalink editing feature for published articles can enhance the flexibility and maintenance of your website's content while preserving a positive user experience. However, it should be used judiciously and with careful consideration of its potential impacts on SEO and user navigation.
